Topic: Decorative Clay Trays

Discover the versatility of clay as you create your own decorative tray using the drape mold technique! In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to shape clay over a mold to form a your piece, then personalize it with textures, patterns, and creative details. Whether you're new to ceramics or have previous experience, this class offers a fun and approachable introduction to handbuilding.

You will learn:

  • How to roll out clay slabs

  • How to use a drape mold

  • How to add decorative elements to your piece with a wide variety of tools

All pieces will be fired in the studio kiln. Options to finish your pieces will be discussed in class. You may choose to glaze or paint your decorative* creations.

*The clay used in this class is for decorative pieces only. Finished pieces will not be food/dishwasher/microwave safe.

Instructor: Misty Johnson

Misty Johnson is a Zanesville, Ohio artist who discovered her love of pottery while pursuing her degree in art education at Kent State University. She has a passion for art and currently serves as the education coordinator at the Zanesville Museum of Art. In her free time, she creates wheel-thrown pottery out of her small, home studio. Her body of work consists of a wide variety of vases, bowls, and both decorative and functional dishes. She loves experimenting with new shapes, textures, and glaze combinations to make each piece a one-of-a-kind work of art.
