Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640)

George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham
Circa 1625
Oil on panel
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. and Clara K. Ayers

During the latter part of Rubens’s career, he was entrusted with a diplomatic role and regularly traveled to England. The artist’s concern with international peace along with his signature Flemish Baroque style, which emphasized movement and color, are distinctly portrayed in this work.
